Nicole Hollows, 2009 Veuve Clicquot Rising Star Award Winner Nicole Hollows, 2009 Veuve Clicquot Rising Star Award Winner

QUEENSLAND BUSINESS WOMAN HONOURED WITH ‘RISING STAR’ AWARD

Nicole Hollows, CEO and Managing Director, Macarthur Coal, was today honoured with a global award, the Rising Star, at the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award 2009.

Nicole is a leading light in the coal industry and the Queensland business community. In 2007, Nicole was just 35 years of age when she was appointed Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Macarthur Coal, a coal mining company with a turnover in excess of AUD$400 million, and 36 when she was made Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director. Macarthur Coal is based in Bowen and is the largest low volatile PCI coal exporter in the world. Under Nicole’s leadership, Macarthur Coal has made some brave moves that have paid off, in particular a strategic change in operations from contractor-based to owner-operator at its main mine. The business has also grown from 50 employees to over 300 employees and delivered strong profits in a challenging environment. Nicole is President of the Queensland Resources Council and is a committed spokesperson for the industry, addressing such issues as the management of environmental impacts and the development of clean coal technologies

Nicole was awarded Rising Star at the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award in Sydney on March 11, 2009, attended by Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC CVO, Governor of New South Wales. Mandy Foley-Quin, CEO, Stedmans Hospitality was awarded the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award 2009.

The Rising Star Award is presented at the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award ceremony to honour young candidates of rare talent and achievement, such as Nicole Hollows. It is the first time that the Award has been presented outside France. Madame Clicquot herself recognized the power of the Rising Star. She identified her own Rising Star at Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin – Edouard Werle – who started at a very young age as an intern with the company, and whom she encouraged and promoted to become her business partner and eventually her successor in the business. In French the Rising Star Award is called “Coup de Coeur” – our vision of the future.

The Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award 2009 and Rising Star Award was decided by an Australian judging panel comprising a previous winner of the Award, Janet Holmes à Court AC; as well as The Honourable Justice Annabelle Bennett AO; Director of Marketing and Special Events for Consolidated Press Holdings, Deeta Colvin; Chairman, Future Fund Board of Guardians, David Murray AO; Director, Paspaley Pearls Group, Marilynne Paspaley AM; Managing Director of Moët Hennessy Australia, James Paton; and CEO of the Bennelong Group, Alison Watkins.

The Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award

The Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award began in France in 1972 to commemorate Madame Clicquot, and to honour women who also possess her qualities of vision, innovation, entrepreneurial drive, leadership, individuality and tenacity. It is a global award given to a leading woman entrepreneur in 17 countries annually. 2009 is a landmark year, the fifth consecutive year of the Veuve Clicquot Business Woman Award in Australia, and 150 years since Veuve Clicquot was first shipped to Australian shores.
